The only count of Sand Cats available are those in captivity.
 The 116 are the total number in zoos globally.

The number in thw wild is unknown because in the wild the sand cat is a very isolated species that lives individually (except in the case of mothers raising kittens) as opposed to socially as they do in captivity. In all but two of the countries their native to, the Sand Cat is protected and hunting them is illegal. There is no count for them in the wild, but estimates are high enough that they are classified as Near Threatened, rather than Endangered, Near Extinct, or even Threatened.

So do not worry Tumblr. Right now, these adorable kitties are doing well enough that with the current laws in place to protect them they will be with us for quite a long while.
